Domestic Violence in Ghana: What You Need to Know

The Reality
Domestic violence remains a serious challenge in Ghana, affecting thousands of women, children, and families every year. It is not only physical abuse — it also includes emotional, sexual, and economic harm. Studies show that more than 1 in 3 Ghanaian women have experienced some form of violence in their lifetime, with many cases going unreported due to stigma, fear, and cultural silence.

Why It Happens

Domestic violence is fueled by:

  • Harmful cultural norms that justify abuse and silence survivors.
  • Economic dependence, where many women stay in abusive homes because of financial insecurity.
  • Weak enforcement of laws, despite Ghana’s Domestic Violence Act (2007).
  • Limited services, such as shelters and trauma counseling, especially in rural areas.

The Impact

  • Survivors often suffer lasting physical and emotional trauma.
  • Children exposed to violence face behavioral and learning difficulties.
  • Families and communities lose productivity and resources, affecting national development.

The Response So Far

  • Ghana passed the Domestic Violence Act (Act 732) and created the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) to help survivors.
  • Civil society groups, like The Ark Foundation, provide shelters and counseling.
  • Campaigns during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence raise awareness.

But despite these steps, services remain underfunded, survivors face barriers to justice, and stigma continues to silence many voices.

What We Can Do Together

  • Break the silence:** Speak out against abuse and support survivors in your community.
  • Promote dignity:** Challenge harmful attitudes that normalize violence.
  • Support services:** Donate, volunteer, or partner with organizations providing shelters, counseling, and advocacy.
  • Empower women:** Invest in education and economic opportunities that give survivors independence.

Call to Action
Domestic violence is not a private matter — it is a societal issue. Every act of support helps break the cycle of abuse. Together, we can create a Ghana where every young woman lives with dignity, safety, and hope.
